Good read as we watch the battle in the Supreme Court over the Affordable Care Act. This article describes how WA’s health insurance offerings went down the toilet when we lost the individual mandate, the provision requiring everybody to buy health insurance. The individual mandate is the key factor in the challenge to the ACA.
I work as the Director of Digital Media for the Washington State Democrats, so I am always thinking about how to post on Facebook, Twitter, and all of these social media sites better. The New Organizing Institute has a great tip of the day, and today’s was particularly good. When it comes to Facebook, be like George Takei.

This weekend, I watched the documentary The Interrupters, about an organization that tries to tackle gang violence one violent act at a time — by taking ex-gang members and people who have lived the life and getting them to mediate conflicts before they happen. This is the article on which the documentary was based.
Interesting facts and ideas in this article: Murder is the leading cause of death between African American men between the age of 15 and 34. People act based on peer pressure, not on incentives like after-school programs or job training.
Note: This article focuses a lot on Gary Slutkin, who created the program, while the movie focuses more on the actual Interrupters and the people who they are trying to save, very carefully avoiding making this movie about white people saving black people from racism. By focusing more on Slutkin and the inspiration behind the CeaseFire program, this article is great background for the movie.
